Try these Activities to practice Trick Words!
Clap out Words:
Say each word, clap out the spelling of the word (one clap for each letter of the word) then say the word again.
Sky Writing:
Students pretend that they are writing on an imaginary large white board. As they say each letter, they "write" it in the air as large as they can. After each word is spelled, students say the word as they "erase" it.
Word Clues:
Lay several trick word cards face up on the floor. Two or more players can play this game. Have players sit in a circle around the cards. One player mentally chooses a word and gives a clue about it: "This word begins with a b." The player can continue to give clues ("It rhymes with tall.") until another player is the first to say and grab the correct card. He or she gets to give the next set of clues.
Memory:
Create two sets of trick words. Lay the cards face down on the floor. Players take turns trying to match identical words and reading the word each time they turn the card over.
Go Fish:
Create two sets of trick words. Play the game of “Go Fish”.
Word Detective:
Have your child write a few trick words on post-its (one word for each post-it). Then ask your child to close his/her eyes as you hide the post-its around the house. Ask your child to be word detective and try to find the hidden words. Make sure your child reads the word once it is found!
Flashlight Fun:
Have your child write the words on Post-its. Choose a room in the house (a room with few windows will work best). Hide the words around the room while your child closes his/her eyes. Then shut off the lights and help your child find the words using a flashlight!
Rainbow Writing:
Ask your child to write the word in pencil first. Then trace over the word using three different colors!
